How to read an area code
- Split. An area is cut in two and one half gets a new code, as when 724 was split from 412 around Pittsburgh in 1998.
- Overlay. A new code is laid over the same map, so neighbors can have different codes, as in Houston, where 713, 281, 832, 346 and 621 all serve one area.
- Local dialing. Areas with an overlay need 10-digit dialing for local calls. Since 2021 many areas without one switched too, so that 988 could work as the national crisis line.
